Also referred as heel fissures the cracked heels are a very common problem. This is purely a cosmetic issue that does not cause any health problems in most cases. These cracks can get very deep in some severe cases, and when you walk or stand this can cause some pain and discomfort.

A number of issues can cause cracked heels from from dry skin to systemic medical conditions like hypothyroidism and diabetes. To help alleviate cracked heels and improve the overall health of your skin there are many things you can do at home.

Glycerin is a highly effective moisturizer and rose water helps to increase the moisturizing effects. Create a foot soak with the following:

  • Enough warm water to soak your feet
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • One-fourth part glycerin
  • Three-fourth part rosewater

For about 20 minutes soak your feet in the mixture and to gently rub the feet to remove dead skin cells take a pumice stone. Pat your feet dry and apply a thick moisturizer.

Oils are natural moisturizers and several of them are especially effective for thick, cracked heels. To increase the speed at which the heels soften helps mixing a variety of moisturizing oils. Massage your heels with a mixture of the following oils:

  • Almond oil
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Sesame oil

To thoroughly massage your feet take about 10 minutes, paying the most attention to your heels and other cracked areas. Put on a pair of thick cotton socks after you massage the oils in so that the oils continue to go to work. It is best to do this right before bed so that the oils work as you sleep.
