Did You Know: With One Potato You Can Illuminate Your Room For A Month
The researchers found that potatoes cooked 8 minutes to open the battery that produces 10 times more power than raw!
Haim Rabinowitch, a professor of science and agriculture, and his team found that using the unit comprised of a quarter slice of potato, located between the copper cathode and a zinc anode connected wire, can illuminate the room with LED lights up to 40 days.
Potatoes could provide electricity for personal electronics for a tenth of the cost of a typical AA batteries.
Just imagine the possibilities and opportunities that this discovery gives people in underdeveloped and remote regions of the world.
“Potatoes are chosen because of their potential growth almost everywhere, including tropical and subtropical climates” – said Rabinowitch.
“It is the world’s most abundant crop” – he added.
While potatoes are not a source of energy, they help conduct electricity by acting as a bridge between the metals, allowing electrons to move freely through the wire, creating electricity.
Apart from growing abundantly, potatoes are selected because of their solid starch tissue, which allows them to be stored for months without attracting insects.
