Costco Joins a Host of Retailers Refusing to Sell GMO Salmon
The FDA had recently announced that he AquAdvantage Salmon, a genetically modified fish known to grow twice as fast as normal salmon, is allowed to be sold. According to them, the AquAdvantage Salmon is almost similar to the farm-raised Atlantic salmon in terms of their nutritional profile and status.
This GMO fish was created by AquaBounty, a Massachusetts-based company, which claims that their fish can be distributed in the grocery store shelves within two years of time!
Costco however, came out with an announcement that it will only opt to sell organic products in the U.S., following a public rally in Seattle, where its customers petitioned for more than 50,000 signatures to ask the major retailer not to distribute GM Salmon.
Costco said that it will not sell genetically modified salmon for the time being, coming into arms with other major retailers, such as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Safeway. These retailers should be applauded for their stance against GMO products.
This is their stance, though GM salmon has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
