When Our Emotions Damage The Body

I’m sure it’s happened to you at least once. You need to go to the bathroom before an exam, there’s a knot in your stomach when you’re holding on to some important news. Or maybe there’s a pain in your chest when someone speaks to you harshly or the behavior hurts you….

This shows us that there is clearly a connection between your body and mind. If our mind suffers, we experience this suffering in our body too. These are called “psychosomatic disorders” in psychology; and everyone experiences these to some degree at some point.

Psychosomatic conditions: when the mind rules

Psychosomatic disorders are often rooted in intense emotions, emotions that we can’t process or that we can’t manage positively. For example, someone might have a stressful job and a boss that doesn’t appreciate them. This person will arrive home feeling down, with a headache, might suffer from insomnia, and may end up with a stomach ulcer or nervous depression. If you keep how you feel inside, don’t act to improve the situation and express how you feel, you may eventually get sick.

The same thing happens when our hearts are broken, for example. When we leave a relationship and we don’t deal with how we feel. Sadness ends up being fed by our thoughts until we get trapped in that dark place, illness. Pain that doesn’t have an objective biological explanation, and sickness caused by the mind.

The clinical manifestations that may be caused by psychosomatic disorder include:

  • Coronary heart disease: Tension and competitiveness normally lead to this disease.
  • Tension headaches: This is the most common problem people generally suffer from when they have a problem.
  • Asthma: Stress in general and specific emotional states can lead to an asthma attack.
  • Low back pain: Back pain in the lumbar region is one of the main causes of absenteeism at work and is almost always associated with emotional problems and tension.
  • Eczema: This is the formation of vesicular, weeping and crusting patches that can be very itchy. It is very often linked to stress.

Open doors: relieve the suffering

It’s never easy. It’s normal to find yourself in situations that are difficult, and know how to react. Everyone has to work to live, and work can be stressful. We can’t control negative events that come into our path. We can’t predict everything in life and ensure an easy, stress-free existence, but we must be prepared, have tools and personal skills to be able to establish limits, to say what we want, maintain good self-esteem, and that way, we can allow powerlessness to fall away behind us.

It’s normal to feel nervous, fear, anxiety, but only under specific circumstance and the feelings should be fleeting. If these “emotions” persist, our body soon begins to complain and you may get sick. Our internal pain should heal, or at least scar, so we can move ahead with our lives happily.

We are the only ones that can open these doors. Our own happiness is in our responsibility. Accept how to feel, take action, and be happier.
