Edema is the swelling of your feet or hands. This condition can be quite painful to sufferers. Edema or the retention of fluids in the body may be as a result of the following reasons;

Parsley is also an excellent diuretic and according to “The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook,”it can help fight edema and it promotes the elimination of excess fluids by the kidneys.

In 2002, researchers published the findings of their study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Their published report stated that “parsley acts as a diuretic by inhibiting the sodium and potassium ion pumps, influencing the process of osmosis and increasing the flow of urine.”

This underrated herb is very rich in potassium. Pharmaceutical diuretics medication have the tendency to reduce the body’s potassium levels as a side effect, but parsley when consumed can help to raise and sustain the body’s potassium levels.

A study conducted in Brazil entitled “Diuretic and hipotensive activity of aqueous extract of parsley seeds” stated that parsley can help in reducing blood pressure as well as being excellent in aiding urinary flow.

Relieving edema problems with parsley tea

Parsley tea when consumed in right quantities can help combat edema problems. A renowned American author and herbalist — Dr. John R. Christopher stated that,drinking at least two quarts (64 oz.) of strong parsley tea per day will help significantly in relieving edema.

Dr. John R. Christopher also recommends the use of “fresh light-green leaves” as well as the seeds and the roots of parsley if readily available.

How to make parsley tea


  1. You should cut the parsley leaves and it’s roots (if available) into small pieces. NB: the chopped up roots and leaves can be stored for about a week and for later use by putting them in an airtight glass jar and refrigerated.
  2. In an infusion basket put about ¼ cup of parsley.
  3. You can either pour a cup of boiled water over it or you can place it in a tea pot.
  4. Allow the mixture to steep for about7 minutes.
  5. You then strain the tea after the 7 minutes is expired or you can take out the basket that was submerged in the tea pot.
  6. If you like you can add lemon, ginger or honey for flavor.
  7. For best results drink your parsley tea warm.

While regular drinking of parsley tea will help reduce the swelling of your feet and ankles, you can also observe other techniques to reduce swelling such as, exercising your legs to promote the pumping of the fluid in your legs back to your heart.

You can also keep your legs elevated, you can achieve this by placing your legs on a pillow when you lie down.This will raise your legs above your heart and will also help relieve the swelling.
