1. Black pepper (Piper nigrum)

How does it act?

You have probably never thought that good old black pepper can be healing spice and be used in traditional Chinese medicine. Black pepper contains components that have anti-inflammatory effects. A study in 2013 focused on piperin, the active ingredient of pepper. Respondents with diseased cartilage were treated with pepper and the inflammatory cell activity was significantly reduced, leading to the conclusion that pepper can be an effective tool against arthritis.

How to use it?

Sprinkle some in your meal. It is better to grind it yourself in order to make sure you put pepper only.

2. Turmeric (Turmeric – curcuma longa)

Best used for: Abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome and depression

How does it act?

This spice has an incredible golden-yellow color. Turmeric’s key component called curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. A recent study has showed that curcumin is as effective for pain relief as Ibuprofen. The biggest difference between turmeric and Ibuprofen is that turmeric does not cause stress in the stomach. In another study it was shown that the unpleasant symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome is reduced by 50% as well as inflammation and abnormal intestinal muscle contraction. Finally, the last clinical survey has shown that turmeric helps reduce symptoms of depression.

How to use it?

Add half a teaspoon of turmeric in your meal, daily.

Caution: In case you suffer from diabetes, consult your doctor before consuming this spice because turmeric in combination with diabetes can drastically lower blood sugar level.

3. Ginger (Ginger- Zingiber)

Best used for: Headache

Hot does it act?

In a study, conducted in 2014, hundreds of people who suffered from migraines were treated with 50 mg of sumatriptan, a drug for migraine, or 250 mg of ginger powder. Two hours after the treatment, in 64% of those who took ginger and 70% of those who took medication the pain decreased by 90%. 20% of the group of participants who took sumatripan had side effects such as dizziness. Only 4% of those who took ginger had mild indigestion.

How to use it?

Eat fresh or powdered ginger and add it to the food. It will enhance the flavor of many dishes. You can also prepare tea in a way you will pour three pieces of fresh ginger in boiling water and cover the mixture. Let the mixture stand still for 10 minutes and add a little honey afterwards.

Caution: If you are taking drugs for thinning the blood, including aspirin, do not consume ginger. If consumed in large quantities, ginger can cause diarrhea or irritation in the mouth.

4. Mint oil (Menthapiperita)

Best used for: Soothing stomach upsets and irritable bowel syndrome

How does it act?

Mint oil is the best therapy for calming cramps in irritable bowel syndrome. It is also good for relieving pain.

How to use it?

Put one teaspoon of dried mint in a cup of hot water, allow to cool, strain and let it cool some more. Drink the tea 4-5 times a day between meals.

Caution: Mint may exacerbate gallstone and worsen situation for people who have reflux. Large amounts of mint can be toxic due to the fact that pure menthol is toxic.
